The Gladesville Amateur Radio Club has conducted regular Television test transmissions since the mid 1980's, using both live and pre-recorded material. These continue today through tvg Sydney.
One of the requirements of producing a quality transmission is the content. To this end, tvg Sydney produces its own interviews, lectures and news items for use on the test transmissions, as well as programming from sources including NASA, CSIRO, local universities and any other providers with suitable material.
To continue this work, the equipment required can be complex. We are constantly in a process of continuous expansion and improvement. Not only do we maintain our existing facilities, but we also install new equipment, ranging from completely built from scratch, to reconditioned, modified and even new commercial equipment. Maintenance is also done on the facilities and there is always more to be done. To keep on air requires many hours of effort, and assistance from many sources, and new volunteers are always welcome.
About tvg Sydney
Located in Sydney, Australia, tvg Sydney provides a service to the community and Amateur Radio by promoting education and awareness of science and technology through the use of Television. tvg Sydney is entirely operated by volunteers, and receives no government funding.
The aims of tvg Sydney include:
- To provide a resource for training and practical experience for people interested in the technology of Television and media production.
- With the assistance of other groups with similar interest, improve the reach and coverage of our television services through relays to the Central and South Coast, and over the Blue Mountains to feed areas west of Sydney.
- To move as far into television technology to keep the quality of the transmissions as close to broadcast specifications as possible.
- To promote Amateur Radio through relaying news bulletings and including test transmission material related to the Amateur Radio service.Our goal is to raise awareness withing both government and the general public of Amateur (ham) radio, and the community service that Ham Radio can provide.
How to watch tvg Sydney
Many modern TVs and VCRs, especially those labelled as 'Cable Ready', are able to tune in directly to receive TV transmissions in the 70cm Amateur band. The transmission frequency is 444.25MHz Vision and 449.75MHz sound. This frequency is variously refererred to as Channel 16, ATV 2, or Hyperband channel S61.
Television Transmission Times in Sydney
We currently run television Test Transmissions on two evenings per week in the Sydney Region.
On Wednesday evening, the tvg Sydney Test Transmission includes live news and feature material, starting from 7.30pm. Sunday evening transmissions include a live relay of the news bulletin from Amateur Radio New South Wales and transmissions commence at 7pm.
Each transmission is preceded by a test card for at least 30 minutes prior.
We plan to expand our coverage and transmissions soon.
